Apps
During my last semester at Binghamton Unversity, I again was a peer mentor for students in the First-Year Research Immersion Program (FRI). I enjoyed my time as an FRI student and chose to return to the Community & Global Public Health Research Stream to give back to the program.
I worked closely with FRI Research Educator Dr. Shane McCarty and my friend Andrew Silhavy on redesigning the course curriculum to reflect the newest developments in research and analysis. My contributions included:
Assisted in developing new syllabus for 2nd course in Public Health sequence (ANTH206)
Taught current FRI students coding in R, including packages such as shiny, ggplot2, dplyr & Quarto
Programming interactive web applications for the class and for Dr. McCarty
Here are some of the apps I have developed:
Health Status Explorer
Using survey responses from the prior FRI Cohort, I created an app that lets the user explore the data with a variety of filters and plots that examine health status inequities. Using shiny, ggplot2, and plotly, I created reactive plots that updates with the user’s selections.
Inequality Perceptions
Through the surveydown package, I created a survey that asks participants their views on how wealth is divided in the United States. Their best guesses, ideals, and actual levels of wealth distribution is shown to them visually at the end.
Mindsets Survey & Results
In collaboration with Dr. McCarty’s organization, Promote Care & Prevent Harm, I sought out to update their Mindsets Quiz.
These prototypes are still collecting survey responses and are undergoing testing.
